WHEN CAN I DO A PROGRAM ?
The Hatching Chicks Program is done over a 2 week period, usually during a school holiday period. I will deliver to you on the first Monday of the holiday. It will take me about 20 minutes to get it all set up and explain to you what you will need to do. I will then return on the Friday afternoon of the second week to collect everything. You can do the program at any time through the school year if you wish however I usually need 1 month prior booking .The earlier you book the more chance you have of getting the date you would prefer.
WHAT DO YOU GET?
On the delivery day I will bring along an incubator and 10 to 12 eggs that are due to hatch on the following day. I will also bring the brooder box which is where the chicks will live for the following 10 days after they hatch .You will be supplied with everything you will need to care for the chicks including chick food and a supply of wood shavings for litter on the bottom of the box. I will also leave you with a book containing written instructions and educational material and lots of craft activities.
WHERE CAN THE INCUBATOR AND BROODER BOX GO?
It is best to set the incubator and brooder box up in a central area of your house where the chicks will be easy to observe. Not much space is required, the incubator is 30cm in diameter and the brooder box is 60cm x30cm. Both the incubator and the brooder box can be set up on a small table beside a power point as both will require power. It should be in a spot that does not get direct sunlight coming through a window as this will overheat the chicks.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER PETS IN THE HOUSE?
If you have dogs or cats inside you will need to watch their reaction to the chicks. In most cases the chicks are no more than a curious interest to them. If the chicks seem to present an irresistible temptation to them you will need to keep them out of the same room.
DO WE NEED TO STAY AT HOME WHILE THE CHICKS ARE HATCHING?
No the chicks will hatch on their own. You can come and go as you please.
CAN WE HANDLE THE CHICKS?
Yes the chicks are not timid and they enjoy being handled gently once they have recovered from hatching at a day old. As they grow older they love to be taken out of the box for a run around the room or a scratch around outside. You will need to stay with them outside as they are prey for crows and currawongs.
DO THEY REQUIRE MUCH WORK TO LOOK AFTER?
No during the first week the chicks will not need much attention as they are so small, they sleep a lot and do not eat or drink very much. During the second week you will need to change the litter in the bottom of the brooder box and fill up the food and water containers daily. This is a chore that children enjoy doing.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO IF WE WANT TO KEEP THE CHICKS?
Doing a hatching chicks program is a great way get started with chooks in your backyard or add some new young layers to your hen house. The eggs I supply are from good egg laying strains and will be suitable to keep as layers for your backyard .They will also be very quiet having been hand reared. If you are not sure about keeping the chicks, I can supply information on raising the chicks and can advise you on what sort of set up you will need. You can then decide during the 10 days they are at your home if you want to keep them or not. If you decide not to keep them I will take them at the end and sell them. If you decide you would like to keep them you will have the 10 days to get set up to raise the chicks at home. The chicks will not be ready to go in a pen outside for another 3 to 4 weeks so this gives you time to build a pen or buy one. In the meantime the chicks can be housed in a large cardboard box in the garage or in the laundry as by this stage they will be too smelly to keep inside your house. During winter they will still need supplementary heat until they are 4 to 5 weeks old. Heat can be supplied by a lamp set up securely in the box.
When the chicks hatch you cannot distinguish between Males and Females. At about 4 weeks of age the roosters develop a larger and redder comb and wattle. If you decide to keep the chicks I will come and take the roosters away at this stage and you will be left with approximately 3 to 5 hens. The cost for this service is $20. More hens of a similar age can be purchased from me at this stage if you would like more.
